Today is the day we remember those who served. Although my Dad did not die while in the service, he did suffer from PTSD. He served in the Navy through a waiver which enlisted him at age 16. He served for 12 years, catching the beginning of the Vietnam War. He spent most of his time on the USS Sumter, a Tank Landing Ship, launched in 1969. It was decommissioned in 1993. My dad was a cook – an essential worker – on a Newport-class tank landing ship! Take time today to remember those who have passed and to appreciate their sacrifice.
Poppies signify the soldiers who have passed. In the second Battle of Ypres, John McCrae was struck by the sight of bright red blooms on the broken ground that covered the dead. He wrote a poem called In Flanders Fields and the poppy became a symbol of the fallen.
